SHETLAND FLEECE

We do not put coats on our sheep, so there will be some VM, but I am a handspinner and skirt the fleeces very heavily.

These last two fleeces were not shorn, but were "rooed". For those of you unfamiliar with Shetlands, some of them still have the natural ability to shed their fleece in the spring. Most shepherds still shear these sheep, as it is easier and quicker. But since we sheared so late this year and some of my girls were losing their fleece as they rubbed against the trees and fences, I decided to roo a couple of them. This means that instead of the shearer giving them a "haircut", I "plucked" their fleece off by the handful. It does not come out at the root, so is not painful to the sheep. It simply breaks off at the natural break in the fleece. You may notice, if you purchase one of these fleeces, that there is some excess lanolin at the base of the fleece. The fleece does get very greasy at the break in the fleece, but this will wash out in very hot water. There will also be no second cuts in these fleeces as only the fleece above the natural break is removed. Have a look!
